The Purge - Part 1

Like most women, I love clothes.  Like most women, I have a lot of them.  And like many women who have gained weight, I have held onto clothes that are my “skinny me”.
Some of these clothes I’ve been holding onto for years.  From my uni days in fact.  And I never got rid of a lot of them, because gaining weight was meant to be “only a temporary” thing.  I would be back to my normal size in no time, right?

My current size is an Australian 22.  I think that comes through in conversions as 20 (UK)/18 (US).  At my fittest/lightest I was a size 10 (Aus)/8 (UK)/6 (US).  My average that I would gravitate around was a 12-14.  [10-12 (UK)/8-10 (US)].  Such a shame that back then I thought I was this huge heffalump and would bemoan my size and how nothing sat right.   If only I knew then just how good I had it. L

*Sigh*

One of the things that spurs me on to keep trying to tone up, to lose weight is because I struggle to find clothes to fit me.

A) not many department stores stock plus sizes
B) the specialist plus size stores are expensive
C) due to my height, and proportions my weight distribution is wonky
D) despite gaining 40kgs of weight I’m not big chested and tops that are big enough to go around my belly are WAY too low cut for my liking.  (As far as I am concerned, the neckline of tops should sit no more than three finger-widths below the collar bone).  Or else they become baggy shapeless sacks across my shoulders and upper torso. L
E) are often designed for a more mature woman, not someone in her late twenties.
F) or are deisgned for a woman who’s (I’m sorry to say) “given up on life”.  Things like rubbishy T-Shirts style tops that will pill and look shabby after two-three washes, or pants made from rather thin fabrics, like linen, which will rub away between the thighs.   Clothes that do not look like they belong in a professional environment, especially if you do not work in air-conditioning.

Polyester and its blends are all well and good, but if you are in a job where you are on your feet and move from location to location, in the summer time, it feels like you may as well be wearing a plastic garbage bag, with sandpaper between the thighs.

I feel like the clothes I like in terms of style are made of polyester or viscose or one of those other synthetics, whilst all the cotton, breathable clothes are t-shirts and the like – which I would not be allowed to wear at work.

*Sigh*

Anyhow.   Today I decided to start tackling the mess that’s been building up in my house.  In fact, I only wrote this as a ‘break’ but it’s turned into a huge post (3 pages and counting!) and it’s two hours later.

I’ll be back with more later this evening, possibly tomorrow.

18 Dec. 14
What did I do well today?
  • ·         I exercised this morning, going for a 3km walk
  • ·         I made myself a low-cal omelette – filled with capsicum, cabbage, spinach and mushroom
  • ·         I stuck to my daily calorie goal

What did I not do well today?
  • ·         Getting the living room organised
  • ·         Making a plan for Christmas shopping
  • ·         Meeting my daily 10,000 steps goal
  • ·         Going swimming in the afternoon à not entirely my fault, we had a storm come through this afternoon!

What did I do that was not on the plan and was a distraction from my goal?
  • ·         Start reading a library book
  • ·         Copying my iPod playlist
  • ·         Watch kids’ tv (I LOVE the Total Drama * Series :D and it happened to be on as a mini marathon as I was eating lunch)

What did I struggle with today?
After lunch (satay chicken stir-fry with brown rice and steamed Asian greens) I realised I really really wanted something sweet.  A Biscuity kind of sweet, not chocolate in particular, but something cool, and crunchy.  I tried drinking some water sweetened with herbal tea, but that wasn’t enough.  I tried some grapes and watermelon but it wasn’t hitting the spot.  I just really wanted something sweet.  A custardy fruit tart would have been swell.

I tried self-talk to determine why I wanted something sweet, but nothing seemed right.  I wasn’t bored, upset or hungry.  I think it was a procrastination thing?  As in, I had the washing to put away, and I needed to sort out the living room.  But by eating, it meant that I could put that off for a little longer.  Even more so if I decided to get adventurous and make something, rather than just open a packet.

*sigh*

I REALLY really wanted a biscuit.

I didn’t eat anything though, because it didn’t fit my daily calories and I wasn’t going to kid myself into thinking, “oh go-on, eat it and you can exercise for it later”.

What’s on the plan for tomorrow?
  • ·         Pre-log tomorrow’s meals.
  • ·         Set alarm to get up for a walk
  • ·         Get out of the house for some Xmas shopping
  • ·         Finish copying the iPod playlist (it’s stopped responding to iTunes.  I tried re-installing iTunes, but it looks like I will need to wipe the iPod.  Oh noes!)

HHPSS

Okay, so the holiday health plans are off to a stumbling start.

I went for 3km walks Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings.  Each one ended up slightly over 3km and took just under 34min, with an average pace of 10'40".

I missed Tuesday morning because I slept late, getting up at 7am.  Trust me, it's already too hot to be going out to exercise at that time!  So I compensated with a 45 min walk that afternoon, after a nanna nap.  I was surprised at myself actually, because I really didn't want to do it.  Like, I was comfy on the couch, and that was that.  In fact, it took me nearly an hour to convince myself to get up and go.  I worked on using the self-talk of "you don't feel like going?  Well, that''s even more reason you need to go."

If I start quitting every time "I don't feel like it", I'm never going to get anywhere, am I?

So I went on this 45 minute walk.  I pushed myself with my pace and managed to cover 5.01km in 45'35".  My pace was 9'06"/km.  I was well happy about that!

I have decided against the Zumba.  WAY.  TOO.  HOT!!  Or humid.  Or both.  Either way, I just can't handle it in a non-cooled environment.  I have no air-con or even ceiling fans.  I have one pedestal fan, that the previous tenant left behind.  I've never been game enough to plug it in.  I also worry because I'm liable to knock into it by accident.  So... no Zumba.  Maybe I'll bring my DVDs to mum's.  She has a window air-con in her living room.  I'll see if I can convince her to let me turn it on while I do some Zumba.  *Rolls eyes*  Maybe I'll have to bring her with some money to cover the cost of the electricity  :)

Haven't quite gone swimming yet either.  I've thought about it, but then I've gotten involved in some activity that takes me through the afternoon and then it's too late.  I know I have the time to go swimming at anytime of the day now that I'm on holidays, and yet... I only want to do it in the afternoon because I feel like it's a waste of the day to go earlier.  One - I find it tiring after being out of practice for months.  and Two - If I go now (at 11:30am), then the day is only going to get hotter, as am I.  I'd rather go in the afternoon, so that I get the chance to cool down after a long hot day.

Already missed a day of logging (Tuesday) for MFP.  Need to work out a log-in-advance system.  Haven't decided yet if that's easier through the web or through the mobile app.

Restarted daily weighing (missing Tuesday).  Seriously, don't know what was up with Tuesday that threw me off everything... ?  On Monday I will take a progress picture and then first Monday of the Month after that.  I have gained weight these last few months.  Back up to my high of ~ 106kg. But, seeing as I reached ~97kg last year, I know it is possible for me to lose weight.  I am still holding onto my initial goal of reaching 90kg.

Plans for rest of today:
  • eat lunch
  • log it
  • fold and put away yesterday's washing
  • vacuum & mop living room floor
  • Declutter and clean kitchen benches
  • Have afternoon tea
  • prep veggies for dinner (stirfry and quiche)
  • Go to pool at 4pm for a swim
  • Home, showered, cooled by 6pm
  • Dinner, log recipes made.
  • Relax

You know it's hot when...

It gets to 6 in the evening and you realise you haven't eaten anything all day   :S

Seriously.  I've been drinking lots of fluids, but I don't recall actually eating anything yet.  Lol.  Maybe my body knows that eating food will just mean my metabolism will create heat energy.  And it's just too hot for that today?  Who knows.  The prediction was for 40*C, but I think we only got to 38*C (100.4*F).  It certainly didn't feel as hot as 40*C (104*F).

Oh wait!  I've nibbled at bits and pieces today.   So I haven't gone completely food free.  I'll tell you more in just a minute...

We have a long weekend this week because of the G20 summit.

I have seriously never known my neighbourhood to be so quiet!  There was lots of media noise about Brisbane being a ghost town and I would have to agree.  It was actually kind of eerie.  I live in an inner city suburb - normally there's lots of movement and action and noise.  Friday it was silent.  So strange.

Instead of getting out of town, like most of the people must have done, I chose to stay at and get some things done at home.  Namely cooking.

That's right.  I chose to spend a weekend when the temperature was 35+ both days, in the kitchen with the oven on or the stove going.  Often both at the same time.

Why?  Because I'm crazy.  : /

No, of course not really. But I needed to make hay while the sun shone.  And my hay making was getting myself organised meal-wise.  I've noticed the past few weeks I've been busy, both during the week and the weekend.  So busy that I've been neglecting to eat properly.  I've been grabbing lunch from a local greasy spoon often backing that up with some form of takeaway for dinner.  Or worse: ice-cream for dinner.  O_O  So, I realised that had to change.  So I took the opportunity this weekend to cook ahead some foods to keep in the freezer.

Oh Yeah!  Did I say?  I bought that upright freezer I'd been thinking about back in October.  The Good Guys had a model that was going on clearance.  Whilst originally a few litres smaller than I was thinking about - for half the price of similar sizes, I wasn't going to be choosy!  Only paid $445 for a 180L freezer.  Bargin!

 I made:
  • Mexican Mince - My take on chilli con carne.  I dose it up with cabbage, grated zucchini, grated carrot, spinach and 5 bean mix, on top of the mince, onion & tin tomato.
  • Mushroom & Bacon quiche - with light shortcrust pastry, light sour cream, zucchini and shallots.  The bacon I use are those cubed bacon bits.
  • Chicken & Mushroom quiche - using leftover roast chook.
  • Devilled sausages - Look ma, no packet mix!  Added carrot for extra vege.
  • Chicken Curry Pasta Bake - this I used a jar of curry simmer sauce for.  I added some grated zucchini for extra vege.
  • Peanut Satay stir-fry - chicken, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, onion, celery, carrot, zucchini, green capsicum, green beans
  • Beef stroganoff - again, not using a packet mix.  Lots of mushroom.  Steak, zucchini.
  • Creamy tomato sauce & filled pasta - you know, using those fresh filled pastas?  Angiolotti, ravioli, and so on.  And apart from using the most vegetably tomato pasta sauce I can (I LOVE Five Brothers' Summer Vegetables pasta sauce!) I add in (have you guessed?) grated zucchini and carrot.
Not bad for a weekend's work, right?  And some of those I have already portioned up with a side of frozen vege.  So all I have to do is take a plastic carton from the freezer, defrost it and nuke it, and tuck in!

I am also going to get a salad mix going too.  Red cabbage, lettuce and baby spinach.  Chop/Shred a big bowl of it and put it in a ziplock bag - grabbing some to add to lunch each day, or as a side with dinner.  I came up with this salad mix a few years ago and I tore through it like there was no tomorrow.  It became the base for other salads that I adapted from day to day.  Sometimes adding cold brown rice, or carrot, or beetroot slaw, or cucumber, or whatever I had handy.  I even adding dressing some days, other days I didn't.  I'm hoping that I get a similar reaction this year.  I figure because I haven't done it for a few years, I'll be all excited and "why did I ever stop doing this?  This is fantastic!"  Lol.

In any case, being busy this weekend cooking food, washing dishes (!) and portioning food, I ended up only eating the scrappy bits left over in the cooking dish in order to clean them up before dumping them into the sink.

So, with that in mind, it seems about time for me to portion up the next chunk of cooking.  That Mexican Mince is still really warm and I finished cooking it at 4pm.  !  That's how hot it is here.  O_O

And I'm going to put on some rice so I can have the stirfy for dinner.  With a side of salad.
